Local Markets and Home Grown Foods

Genevieve2Genevieve Angelides, brilliant sunflowers in hand, enjoys her visit to the Kaiser Permanente farmer’s market.  The market is open from 9 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. every Thursday.  Genevieve goes there for fruits and vegetables.  “Vendors are friendly,” she says, “and produce is very fresh with lots of variety.”  She also goes to the farmer’s market in Centerville, near the train station.

Just a thought about growing your own plants at home.  It’s impractical on a large scale for many of us because of time, space, environmental constraints, or simply because we no longer have the physical ability to do so.

In such cases I’d suggest getting a few small pots capable of holding one plant each and sticking a plant into each of them.  African violets and some herbs provide good examples.

Put six or so of the potted plants on a small wheeled table (a tea cart, for example) and sit it in an out-of-the way corner of the room.  Move it out into the sunlight once a day, then move it back before the plants gets too much sun.

Keep the plants fed and watered, and viola! you’re a farmer.

My mother used this technique with great success until late in her 80s.
