Fremont Unified School District promotes Animal, Vegetable, Miracle learning.
The selection of the 2009/2010 One Book, One Community choice fits in perfectly with this year’s Fremont Unified School District Service Learning Approach.
That approach focuses on the environment and the importance of a green community. In a special Service-Learning Network section for teachers, the district recommends several service-learning projects centered on some of the themes inherent in Animal, Vegetable, Miracle that promote the idea of eating and buying foods locally.
Some of the projects suggested by the district include staging a community discussion session, creating a school garden, putting together a seasonal cookbook, etc.
There are also history, geography, health, nutrition, English, science, art and math connections that students can work on.

It might be fun to take on one of these projects ourselves or with children and grandchildren.
