The presentation of Mark Twain’s biography to the Country Club of Washington Township’s Women’s Club on Tuesday afternoon, April 2nd marked the fifth year AAUW Fremont Branch’s One Book, One Community team visited the wonderful women of this long-standing charitable organization.
“Each year, this is one of our favorite venues,” said the team’s co-chair Genevieve Angelides. “You are always so respectful, so responsive and ask so many excellent questions.”
Genevieve opened the meeting with a detailed history of the five years of the One Book, One Community journey and applauded the fact that each book and theme were so well appreciated by members of the Washington Country Club.
Five Fremont Branch presenters told the life story of Samuel Longhorne Clemens, known to us all as MarkTwain. Shirley Gilbert started off the session with Twain’s childhood and early life. Jo Szeto continued with all of Twain’s occupations ending with journalist, author and revered speaker. Anne MacCloud followed up with Twain, the family man and his marriage to his beloved Lizzie. Margery Leonard described Twain’s principal works both those published and several unpublished. And Genevieve ended with a moving quote Twain supplied at the end of his life: “Death is the only immortal who treats us all alike…and whose peace and refuge are for all.”
The presentation finished with members of the audience being assigned various humorous quotes from Mark Twain that set everyone to giggling.
