It’s Saturday, November 2, 2013 at Hopkins Middle School and more than 50 fifth and sixth graders are intently engaged in the activities offered at the Math/Science Discovery Day organized by the Fremont Branch of AAUW.  The girls came with their moms or aunts or grandmas or adopted moms to attend a planetarium show or delve into fingerprints or explore kitchen chemistry (no explosions, please) or delicately create origami.

They eagerly flowed through five learning sessions, clearly enjoying the chance to have fun doing the hands on activities.  At the end of the half day program after the evaluations were completed, the snacks consumed and the goodbyes said, the girls left having told the organizers that they wanted more – more centers, more activities for their moms to do, more items in their packets.

Another successful day is done.

WHAT IS AAUW’S TECH TREK?

How tall a tower can you build with spaghetti?

Tech Trek is a math/science camp program of the CA American Association of University Women.  It is designed to develop interest and excitement in math and science as well as develop self-confidence in young women.  The girls who will enter eighth grade in the fall will attend one of the 9 Teck Trek camps located on college campuses throughout the state.  While experiencing campus life and dorm living, they attend daily math and science core classes in addition to hands-on class activities and physical education.  Off-site field trips augment the information they learn earlier in the week.  During recent years the Fremont Branch has sponsored from two to six girls from the Tri-City area to attend the 6 day camp.

Earlier this year, application materials were distributed to seventh grade Math and Science teachers in the Tri City area.  Each school can nominate a maximum of five girls to be considered for this opportunity.  The nominated girls receive applications which they complete along with a two page essay.  Later, members of the Fremont AAUW branch will interview the applicants.  Then the AAUW branch selection committee has the difficult decision of selecting 6 girls who will attend Teck Trek Camp this June or July and receive one of the six $900 Tech Trek Scholarships.

If you have a daughter or know of any young woman who will attend seventh grade next year and would benefit from this opportunity, have them discuss it with their math/science teacher next year.
